Creation and Vision

Conceived by Hilary Whitton Paipeti, a British expatriate who has called Corfu home for over 35 years, this trail is her brainchild. A seasoned author of numerous walking guides about Corfu, Paipeti meticulously charted the Corfu Trail, interconnecting ancient and nearly forgotten footpaths into a remarkable longitudinal trek across the island.

Diverse Terrain and Natural Wonders

As you embark on this journey, you’ll traverse a tapestry of diverse terrains. The trail winds through bucolic rural landscapes, meandering across olive groves that have stood for centuries and through ecologically rich nature reserves. Here, one can encounter a plethora of rare avian species, exotic flora, and unique fauna. The path itself is a blend of rugged footpaths, traditional mule tracks lined with pebbles, gravel-laden routes, and occasionally, stretches along sandy or pebbly beaches.

Importantly, the trail veers away from the well-trodden tourist paths, offering a serene and authentic experience of Corfu. Along the way, you’ll discover historic monasteries, an array of churches reflecting Venetian and Byzantine influences, stunning beaches offering breathtaking vistas, and quaint villages where time appears to have paused, untouched by the rapid pace of modern life.

Trail Markings and Direction

Marked meticulously with yellow Corfu Trail (CT) signs, complemented by directional arrows, the trail is designed for clarity and ease of navigation. These markers are strategically placed and guide trekkers in both directions. While the trail can be traversed either way, it is often recommended to start from the south, moving towards the north. This gradual progression from the flatter southern landscapes to the more challenging, mountainous terrain in the north allows hikers to acclimate to varying elevations seamlessly.

The journey unveils increasingly diverse and captivating landscapes as one progresses from south to north. Elevations on the trail range from sea level to a challenging 850 meters, with daily altitude variations between 150 to 650 meters.

Hiking Experience

Each day on the Corfu Trail can vary from 4 to 8 hours of walking, depending on individual pace, fitness levels, and, of course, the irresistible temptation to pause for rest, photography, or simply to soak in the breathtaking views. Hikers are advised to carry only essentials to ensure a comfortable trek.

The trail is designed for self-guided exploration, with detailed route descriptions and maps provided. For those who prefer digital assistance, GPS tracks are available upon request. Local support is also accessible for any assistance required during the hike.

Embarking on the Corfu Trail is not just a hike; it’s a journey through the heart of Corfu, away from the bustling tourist spots, into a world where nature’s tranquility and historical richness create a tapestry of unforgettable experiences.
